Part 3: Lucid

Auto Zürich 2024 will feature an even larger portfolio of brands and exhibitors than last year. We will be introducing those who will be represented in the halls of Messe Zürich for the first time this year individually here in the coming weeks.

Lucid Motors, formerly Atieva, was founded in 2007 and is based in Newark, California, near Silicon Valley. Under the name Atieva, Lucid initially focused on developing batteries and electric drivetrains for other car manufacturers. Most recently, the company had filed more than 50 patents for its central battery system in the US alone.

In 2013, the company was a successful manufacturer of connected battery packs and electric powertrains and began to consider developing its own car. That's when Peter Rawlinson, previously VP of Vehicle Engineering and chief engineer for the Model S at Tesla, joined the team.

In October 2016, the company officially announced its intention to change its name to Lucid Motors. It also announced plans to produce an all-electric luxury vehicle. The first prototype, the Lucid Air, was unveiled later that year and caused a stir when it beat a Tesla Model S by 9.9 seconds in a quarter-mile race.

A special feature are the Lucid motors with their specially developed hairpin windings. These fold over each other in a multi-layered braid so that no solder joints are created. To keep the motor cool, drilled channels spray an ATF-like oil directly onto the windings. Thanks to these innovations, the Lucid motor uses less than half the copper used in a Tesla Model 3 motor, while offering 56 percent more power.

Lucid offers the Air in four configurations with single, double and triple engines. With 1,251 hp (900 kW), the Lucid Air in the "Sapphire" version is currently the most powerful sedan in the world.

Lucid's second model was unveiled at the end of 2023: The Gravity is a seven-seater SUV that, according to the manufacturer, can travel up to 700 kilometers on one battery charge. It will also feature a fast-charging function with up to 300 kW and a 900-volt electrical architecture.
